Reading Buddies is a program designed to improve and expand the reading skills of local elementary students so they are on track to read at grade level by the end of third grade.
Students received their own stuffed animal buddy to read to for fifteen minutes each day. The program improves student motivation to read while focusing on fluency. Reading Buddies also improves their self-esteem and helps children develop empathy and nurturing characteristics.
Reading Buddies is currently being utilized at Miami Elementary School and Vinton Elementary School in four second grade classrooms. The children have all named their buddies and have reported to us that they like their buddies and that they help them read.
