Big gains for United Way campaign this week; much ground left to cover by Nov. 21

Volunteer leadership for the It's your move. Live United. campaign announced reaching $3,538,251 or 72.2 percent of their $4.9 million campaign goal.

"Three weeks remain before the end of our campaign on November 21. We've made considerable progress during the last week," said Al Gatmaitan, President and CEO of IU Health Arnett and 2013 Campaign Chair.

During the fourth report meeting of the 2013 campaign, the work being done in the health focus area was spotlighted. United Way is focused on families and children adopting healthy lifestyles. Mental Health America of Tippecanoe County addresses this with its Compeer Program that provides volunteer mentors and friends to adults dealing with mental health issues. Program participants make marked improvements in self-esteem and social interaction. Mental Health America is one of 23 non-profit organizations supported by the It's your move. Live United. campaign.

On this date last year, pledges to United Way of Greater Lafayette amounted to 84.8 percent of the campaign compared to today's 72.2 percent.

"We have made much progress during the last week thanks in part to our volunteers and media partners sharing the campaign news," said Gatmaitan. "We are most grateful to the community for taking action. If each of us continues advocating for United Way, and we all do our part, progress will continue. If we fall short of reaching our goal, those who have serious needs will feel the greatest effects, and we cannot afford to let our friends and neighbors down."

Gatmaitan also announced a special envelope insert would be in the Friday edition of the Journal & Courier this week for members of our community who wish to make a gift to United Way but are not part of a workforce campaign.

Volunteers, United Way staff and agency representatives will celebrate the close of the It's your move. Live United. campaign on Thursday, November 21 at The Historic Lahr Atrium starting at 5:15 p.m. The final campaign total will be announced during this event, and United Way of Greater Lafayette's 90th anniversary will also be recognized. The public is invited and encouraged to attend, but reservations are requested by November 11. Call Erin at 742-9077 ext. 241.
